About Me

Dr. Makayla Gangemi, DC

Hi, I’m Dr. Gangemi, a chiropractic physician and applied kinesiologist!

I was born and raised in North Carolina, surrounded by natural healthcare. My father, Dr. Stephen Gangemi, is a chiropractor and AK practitioner, and is the founder of the Systems Health Care office and technique. As his daughter, I grew up with Applied Kinesiology treatments being my normal form of healthcare. As a child, I also attended my mom’s midwife appointments and was present for the homebirth of my younger brother (see photo of 5-year-old me using a toy syringe as a fetoscope). My parents taught me and my siblings to prioritize quality nutrition, exercise, and how to use natural care as primary healthcare, with medical intervention being the “alternative care” when necessary.

Growing up with these values, I have always been passionate about natural healthcare. I have also always been particularly drawn to women’s health, pregnancy, and pediatric care. From a young age I knew I wanted to become a chiropractor, and I began working towards that degree path as soon as I could.

I received my Bachelor of Science and then my Doctorate of Chiropractic degree both from Logan University, located in Missouri. While in school I attended numerous elective courses and seminars outside of school and achieved a few certifications (listed below). I have received training in applied kinesiology, pediatric techniques, perinatal techniques such as Webster technique and Spinning Babies, craniosacral therapy and SOT, acupressure, nutritional therapy, lab analysis, myofascial (soft-tissue) therapy, and more.

I met and married my husband, Dr. Zach Watts, while in chiropractic school. After graduation we both joined my father at the Systems Health Care office in Chapel Hill, NC.

As your healthcare provider, I will support your body’s innate ability to heal and help you towards optimal health. I would love to be a part of your team!

Who Do I Treat?

I see patients of all ages and abilities, from newborns to elderly, and everywhere in between. I often see each member of a family.

I specialize in pediatrics, pregnancy/postpartum care, women’s health, and functional medicine. Although the majority of my practice consists of women and babies/children, I see many patients outside of this demographic each week, and I love serving all types of patients!

A typical day for me could include anything from a baby with colic, to an athlete looking to improve their performance, to an elderly patient recovering from a stroke.
